Mid-Congress Field Trip

The field trip includes the visit to the Telese thermal center SPA and the Ferrarelle mineral bottling waters plant.

The Telese spa is near the little town of Telese (Campania Region), 30 km NE far from Caserta and at the foot of the carbonate mountains of the Appennines. The springs of Telese (HCO3-Ca type, temperature ranging from 20 to 24 C°, sulphurous and CO2-rich) emerged after the earthquake of 1349 and they are located close to the renowned spring of Grassano (flow discharge of about 3 m3/s). All these springs are close to a small lake of karst origin and at the base of the carbonate hill of Montepugliano, where several sinkholes can be observed.

The Telese spa began its activity in 1877 with Eduardo Minieri and today has excellent health and accommodation facilities. The thermal establishment is surrounded by an enchanting park of secular trees, where there are also two pools of cold mineral water for the treatment of skin diseases, the digestive and respiratory systems and rheumatism problems.

The Ferrarelle spa mineral bottling waters plant is located near the small town of Riardo (Campania Region), 50 km NW from Telese and at the south-eastern side of the Roccamonfina Volcano. The mineral waters in this area are known since the Roman period. The waters are calcium bicarbonate type and rich in CO2. The waters are hosted in a confined deep carbonate and shallow pyroclastic formations. Groundwater is tapped by numerous wells, which are for simplicity locally called "springs".

The field trip will give an overview of the exploitation cycle of mineral sparkling water from the spring to the bottle. During the visit, the main geological and hydrogeological features of the area will be explained.
